I believe that translating the books of Roald Dahl into Welsh is a fantastic idea; he is one of my favourite authors. I’ve just finished ‘Charlie a’r Esgynnydd Mawr Gwydr’ a wonderful book full of the magic of Willy Wonka and it is also extremely funny. I enjoy a number of the characters especially Miss Tibbs and the Head of the army. They are very funny and interesting and the leader of the army continually tries to blow up Charlie and Willy Wonka because he didn’t understand Mr Wonka talking and thought that he was an alien from Mars or Venus. Firstly there is a strange and frightening sound that sends Charlie, his family and the magical Mr Wonka to outer space and a number of exciting adventures are just about to begin. They receive an invitation to stay in the Space Hotel of USA but the Head of the army doesn’t really like them and this leads to a lot of fun. My favourite part of the story was when Grandma Georgina, Grandma Josephine and Grandpa George all had too much Wonka-Feit and they suddenly turn into babies. Mrs Bucket screamed in panic after she saw her family change in the wink of an eye but Mr Wonka said, ‘Ti fydd y person cyntaf yn y byd i newid cewyn ei thad!’ I couldn’t stop laughing when I read this sentence, what fun!! We meet aliens called ‘Cnedwyr Gwib’ and I think the description of them is excellent,‘ Roedd ambell wahaniaeth bach o ran maint a siap y pump, ond roedd ganddyn nhw i gyd yr un croen crychlyd gwyrddfrown ac roedd y croen yn tonni ac yn curo’ I do not want to spoil the ending and I’m sure you cannot wait to find out if Charlie’s family stay as babies. Remember to enter the magical world of Mr Wonka and buy the book now! By Owain Carbis |
